Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu, VC
Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu was the first Fijian recipient of the Victoria Cross. On 23 June 1944, while fighting on Bougainville, he was badly injured. His men attempted to rescue him and ignored his orders to retreat. He raised up, deliberately exposing himself to Japanese fire, and was killed.
