Sopwith F.1 Camel on Lighter H3

Sopwith F.1 Camel on Lighter H3

Here we see a Sopwith F.1 Camel on a lighter being towed at 10 knots by the destroyer the photograph was taken from. This picture is sometimes identified as showing the Sopwith 2.F1 Camel N6812, in which Lt. S.D. Culley made the first succesful take off from a lighter on 31 July 1918. However the wide central struts for the centre section of the upper wing show that this is a standard F.1 Camel. However the lighter does have the modifications made after the first, failed, attempt to take off eight weeks earlier, with a wider deck and bow.
