Home Defence Sopwith F.1 Camel of No.51 Squadron

Here we see the Home Defence Sopwith F.1 Camel of Captain G.S.M. Insall, V.C, a patrol leader with No.51 Squadron, RFC, at Throwley. The Home Defence version of the Camel had two Lewis guns on the upper wing in place of the normal fixed Vickers guns, as did the Naval version, the Sopwith 2F.1 Camel. However the Home Defence version also had the cockpit moved back to allow the pilot easier access to the guns and that can be seen here, where the cockpit is clearly behind the central struts for the upper wing. In comparison on a normal Camel the rear struts were on either side of the cockpit.
