Eighth Army Sherman north of Orvieto
Here we see a Sherman tank of the Eighth Army advancing north from the key road junction of Orvieto, sixty miles north of Rome, which fell to the Allies on 14 June. The first intact bridge over the Tiber north of Rome was at Orvieto, and its fall to the Allies meant that the Germans couldn't make a stand on the Dora Line, their first fallback position north of Rome.
