Sikorsky S-42 'Samoan Clipper'

This picture shows the Samoan Clipper, a Sikorsky S-42 Flying Boat operated by Pan American Airways. This aircraft was destroyed by an aerial explosion while dumping fuel in preparation for an emergency landing at Pago Pago on 11 January 1938.

Many thanks to Carol Gilbert for letting us post this picture, which was taken by her uncle Ken Callingham just before the aircraft took off from Auckland Harbour on its disastrous final flight.
