Marshal Pavel Rotmistrov, 1944
The seated figure on the right is Marshal Pavel Rotmistrov, the commander of the 5th Guards Tank Army at the battle of Kursk. After the battle he was removed from active command because of the heavy losses suffered by his army, but he survived being sacked and in February 1944 became the first Soviet Marshal of Armoured Troops. In this picture he is said to be giving instructions on how to cross a river with tanks.
