Plans of Lion Class Battlecruisers

Plans of Lion Class Battlecruisers
These plans show the Lion class battlecruisers (Lion and Princess Royal), the battlecruiser equivilents of the Orion class battleships, carrying the same 13.5in guns. They suffered from a number of design flaws. The decision to keep the midships turret instead of using a pair of superfiring turrets at the rear limited the arc of fire of this turret and also made the internal layout more complex, with the base of the turret and related magazine and shell room breaking up the engine spaces. The position of the foremast, just before the foreward funnel was also a mistake, as it exposed the fire control top to excessive smoke. HMS Queen Mary was externally very similar to the earlier ships, but with some internal changes.
