Pescara Dam before Allied raid of 5 May 1944
Here we see the Pescara Dam, close to the town of Torre dei Passeri, before it was attacked and damaged by Allied aircraft on 5 May 1944. The Allies were worried that the Germans would open the dam to flood the Pescara valley before the Allied offensive of May 1944, and so sent a mix of RAF Mustangs and Kittyhawks to dive bomb the dam gates. The gates were cracked and the reservoir emptied, flooding the valley and closing down a hydro-electric plant.
