Martin P3M-2 in the 1930s
Here we see a Martin P3M-2 in the air at some point in the 1930s. The P3M was the production version of the Consolidated XPY-1 design, built after Martin underbid Consolidated for the production contract. However the original design had been produced by the Navy, and Consolidated had then won the contract to produce the prototype. They also had the rights to sell the aircraft to the civilian market and to develop it further, so their sole PY-1 was followed by the P2Y and then the PBY Catalina.
