M22 Light Tank 'Locust' in Hamilcar Glider
The M22 Light Tank was an American design for a tank light enough to be carried into combat in a glider or transport aircraft. In American service it had to be carried under a C-54 Skymaster, with the turret removed. In British service, where it was known as the Locust, it could fit inside the giant Hamilcar glider. Here we see a Locust inside the cargo bay of a Hamilcar, with all three crew members visible and giving some idea of just how small the tank was. It was only used in combat once, during the British crossing of the Rhine in 1945.
