View west across St. Peter's Square, c.1944-5

This picture shows the view across St. Peter's Square towards St. Peter's Basilica, as it was after Mussolini had demolished the 'spina', a block of buildings between two of the approach roads to the square. Since then more modern buildings have been built between this viewpoint and the square (including the current location of the Vatican Press Office).

This picture comes from the collection of Jim Tucker, who served with No.293 Squadron. Many thanks to his son-in-law Roger Bruton for sending us these pictures.
