Officers of HMS Unsparing, 1944

Here we see the officers of the U-class submarine HMS Unsparing after their return from a series of patrols in the Mediterranean.

In the centre is the Unsparing's commanding officer, Captain Aston Dalzell Piper (known in the Navy as Peter Piper), the first reservist to command a submarine and the first reservist to receive the Distinguised Service Cross during the Second World War. He commanded the Unsparing from August 1942 when she entered service to October 1944, taking her out on fourteen patrols during that period.
