Crew of HMS Ultimatum after patrol
Here we see the crew of the U class submarine HMS Ultimatum after their return to base at the end of a patrol in the Mediterranean in which they claimed to have sunk 6,000 tons of enemy shipping. This picture was probably taken at the end of her 25th War Patrol and 21st in the Mediterranean, which took place in the second half of July 1944 and saw her attack a group of German ships off the south coast of France, sinking a German landing barge normally identified as F 111 (although that barge doesn't appear to have been lost on that date, F811 was so may have been the ship in question). In either case these were much smaller ships than the claim.
