By the time this picture was published, the Renown was the last of Britain's battlecruisers still afloat in her original role. At the start of the Second World War Hood and Repulse were both in service, but they were both sunk during 1941. Two of the three converted carriers of the Courageous class had also been sunk, leaving only HMS Furious.
