HMS Pioneer from the right
Here we see the Colossus class carrier HMS Pioneer, designed as a light fleet carrier, but completed as an aircraft maintenance ship for service in the Pacific. Amongst the modifications were the instalation of deck houses at the stern and to the side of the island, which mean aircraft could no longer land or take off from here, but instead were moved onto her by cranes. She arrived in the Pacific just in time to repair a handful of aircraft before the Japanese surrender, and went into the reserve in 1946, so had a very short career!
