Damaged 4in gun on HMS Laertes
Here we see the damage caused to one of the 4in guns on the Laforey class destroyer HMS Laertes by a pre-mature shell explosion at the battle of Heligoland Bight (28 August 1914) . The damage shows some of the internal structure of the barrel, with several layers of construction.
