HMS Illustrious before 1904

Here we see the Majestic class battleship HMS Illustrious in her Victorian livery of black hull, white upper works and buff funnels. The Majestic class ships were the first British battleships with modern turret, featuring a barbette carried below the deck and an armoured gun house to protect the barrels. The Illustrious was one of two members of the class to have circular barbettes that allowed the gun to be reloaded in any position, the basic design used in turrets for the next sixty years.
