HMS Defender sinking off Sidi Barrani, 1941

Here we see the D class destroyer HMS Defender sinking north of Sidi Barrani on 11 July 1941, after she was hit by a German bomb while evacuting troops from Tobruk during the first siege. The picture was taken from the V class destroyer HMAS Vendetta, which had attempted to tow her to safety, but eventually had to sink her.

This picture comes from the collection of the Australian War Memorial, and is in the public domain.
