Grumman Wildcat on HMS Chaser
Here we see a Grumman Wildcat on the flight deck of HMS Chaser, with the ships of Convoy RA 57 in the background. This was the return version of Convoy JW 57, the first of the Arctic convoys to be accompanied by an aircraft carrier. Five U-boats were sunk during the two convoys, proving the value of the escort carrier.
