Here we see the Thornycroft special Acheron class destroyer HMS Acheron passing one of the Palmerston forts in the Solent. The Acheron class had one less funnel than the previous Acorn, class, which was moved further back from the bridge. However this didn't stop smoke getting onto the bridge, and the forward funnel had to be heightened - in this picture the smoke is heading away from the bridge, but one can easily imagine it heading in the other direction.
