Recovering torpedo on HMS Vampire

Recovering torpedo on HMAS Vampire

Here we see a torpedo being recovered onto the V class flotilla leader HMAS Vampire, at some point in 1940. Torpedoes were both expensive and limited in number, so after any practice firing it was standard practice to retrieve the torpedoes for further use.

This picture comes from the collection of the Australian War Memorial, and is in the public domain.
