Breech of 4in Mark VIII Gun, HMAS Huon

Breech of 4in Mark VIII Gun, HMAS Huon
Here we get a good view of the breech mechanism on one of the 4in Mark VIII guns on the Australian River class destroyer HMS Huon. The picture was taken at Devonport in March 1919, just before she departed for Australia. These guns used a Welin interrupted thread breech, and here we can see the gaps in the threads that allowed the breech block to be inserted. It then only had to be rotated a short distance to engage the mechanism.
