German attack on the Chemin de Dames

German attack on the Chemin de Dames
According to its post-war caption this picture shows elite German soldiers attack on the Chemins de Dames. The terrain certainly looks right, and we can see some troops advancing from a fairly complex trench network, with smoke from enemy shell fire dotted around. This area was fought over on several occasions, starting with the first battle of the Aisne (13-28 September 1914), and the presence of largely intact trees in this picture suggests it might come from that period.
