Log book for Lt D.W. Gay - 5-22 September 1944

This page from Lt. D.W. Gay's Log Book covers his flying experiences from 5-22 September 1944 and include his first four combat missions serving as the navigator and bomb aimer in the Martin B-26 Marauder

Operation 1 was an attack on an enemy stronghold near Rimini, described as 'Result - Apple'. I have been unable to find any official explanation of this code, but it appears in at least one other SAAF log book, and it would appear to be a simple code for the result of the mission - Apple for success, Lemon for failure.

Operation 2 was an attack on an enemy stronghold to the north-west of San Marino, judged to be a Lemon.

Operation 3 was an attack on 20 field guns to the north-north west of Rimini, and was an 'Apple'.

Operation 4 was an attack on a bridge to the south-west of Rimini and was a 'lemon'.

Many thanks to Martin Hampton, the son in law of Lt. Gay, for sending us this material.
