French attack Royan on Gironde, 1945
Here we see French troops advancing through the streets of Royan, a town on the Gironde estuary that was almost destroyed by bombing aimed at the major fort guarding the estuary and by the fighting to liberate the ruins. The bombing had been ordered on the understanding that the civilian population had been evacuated, but tragically that wasn't the case.
