General Elster's force marches to surrender
Here we see part of General Botho Elster's force as it marched north to surrender to US forces on the Loire, after surrendered without coming under direct pressure from Allied ground troops. Instead they were harassed by the Resistance, attacked from the, lost contact with other German troops and knew that their route back to Germany was blocked. The controversial march took them north from Issoudun to Beaugency on the Loire, away from the areas they had marched through during their attempt to retreat from the south-west of France.
