General Elster's staff discuss surrender terms
Here we see Major General Botho Elster (the shortest figure, second from right, holding a map) and his staff discussing the terms of their surrender. Elster commanded just under 20,000 men and was attempted to retreat from the south-west of France back to Germany, but got cut off between Allied forces advancing from Normandy and from the south of France. His force was being harassed by the Resistance and attacked from the air, and became the first major German force to surrender without coming into contact with Allied land forces. Here they are probably discussing the route of their march north from Issoudun to Beaugency on the Loire to surrender to US troops.
