Sir Edward Grey, British Foreign Secretary 1914

This picture shows Sir Edward Grey, the British Foreign Secretary at the start of the First World War in 1914. He attempted to prevent the outbreak of war, but has since been criticised for not making it clear to Germany that Britain would declare war to protect Belgium. His most famous quote came at the outbreak of war - "The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our time"
