Damaged Dunquerque at Toulon, 1944
Here we see the remains of the French battleship Dunquerque in Toulon harbour after it was captured during Operation Dragoon. The battleship had been scuttled by the French on 27 November 1942 to prevent it falling into German hands. The Italians were given control of the wrecks and decided that the Dunquerque was beyond repair. They were responsible for cutting off the barrels in her forward turret. After the Italian surrender the Germans took control of the ship, and it was them who cut off the bow, just in front of the forward turret, to try and move it out of drydock.
