Douglas C-54 from the left

Here we see a Douglas C-54 Skymaster of the US Army Air Forces Tropical Science Mission at Mombasa, Kenya, in April 1946 from the left. From this angle it is quite remarkable how far forward the tricycle undercarriage is, making the rear of the aircraft look rather precariously balanced. However all of the weight of the engines is in front of the wheels, presumably making the aircraft perfectly stable.

Many thanks to Michael Hopkins for sending us these pictures, which came from his father's collection, and came towards the end of his RAF service, which lasted from August 1941 to November 1946.
