Royal Navy diver being lowered at Cherbourg
Here we see a Royal Navy diver being lowered from the causeway at Cherbourg into a small boat, ready to start salvage work in the harbour. Cherbourg fell to the Americans on 30 June, but only after the Germans had done a great deal of damage to the port. The first cargo ship didn't enter the port until mid-August, and it wasn't working at close to its original capacity until the autumn of 1944.
