Destroyed Bridge on the Loire, 1944
The original 1944 caption describes this as one of the bridges across the Loire destroyed by the US 9th Air Force to prevent the Germans moving reinforcements to Normandy. However it most closely resembles the bridge over the Loire at Gennes (now Gennes-Val de Loire), which connects the south bank of the river (right) to the Ile de Gennes (left), which still has the same field pattern. If that is the case, then this bridge was actually destroyed by the French during the last stages of the fighting in 1940. This would also explain the total lack of debris from the roadway.
