Captured German Lines, Gommecourt, Somme

This picture shows part of the old German front line at Gommecourt on the Somme, after it had passed into British hands. The landscape is everything one might expect for a First World War battlefield, dominated by the shattered remains of trees. Gommecourt was attacked at the start of the battle, but didn't fall to the British until February 1917.
