Destroyed Leopold Bridge, Liege, August 1914
Here we see the Leopold Bridge over the Meuse at Liege, destroyed by the Belgians before the Germans could capture it during the Siege of Liege of 5-16 August 1914. This was an early sign that Belgium was going to put up a serious fight, something that the Germans hadn't planned for.
