Brewster F2A-2 Buffalo of VF-3, 1940
This Brewster F2A-2 'Buffalo' of VF-3 is seen in McClelland Barclay's experimental camouflage design No.2. Barclay was a pre-war artist and a member of the Naval Reserve from 1938 as Assistant Naval Constructor. He later worked in the Recruiting Office, as well as working as an unofficial war artist, spending short periods at sea. This photograph was taken at Naval Air Station North Island, California, on 9 September 1940. This form of dazzle camouflage proved ineffective on aircraft.
