Side view of Borgward IV, Anzio
This picture gives us a side view of a damaged Borgward IV heavy explosive carrier (Sd.Kfz.302). This was a reusable demolition vehicle. The single crew member would drive the vehicle close to the target, get out, and then use a radio control unit to move it up to its target. The explosive charge would then be dropped, the vehicle would retreat and the charge would explode. The driver could then get back in and return to safety. In practice the thin armour made the Borgward IV too vulnerable to enemy fire, and it was considered to have been a failure. This example was knocked out at Anzio.
