617 Squadron Bombing Brest, 8 August 1944
Here we see an explosion in the U-boat pens at Brest on 5 August 1944, during a raid by 16 aircraft of No.617 Squadron. Five direct hits with 12,000lb were recorded at the time, although post-war analysis raised that to six. The Tallboy bomb was capable of penetrating the thick concrete roof of the pens, and forced the Germans to attempt to further reinforce other key facilities.
