Steps to the Sacred Bo Tree, Anuradhapura

This picture shows the steps up to the terrace surround the sacred bo tree (Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi) at Anuradhapura on Sri Lanka during the mid 1940s. The tree is said to have been planted in 249 BC, making it the oldest known human planted tree anywhere.

Many thanks to Ken Creed for sending us these pictures, which were taken by his wife's uncle Terry Ruff during his time with No.357 Squadron, a special operations unit that operated over Burma, Malaya and Sumatra.
