Ruwanwelisaya Stupa, Anuradhapura

The Ruwanwelisaya Stupa is one of the largest monuments at the sacred city of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. It was built around 140 BC, but was a ruin by the nineteenth century. It was restored after a fundraising exercise at the start of the twentieth century and was only crowed in 1940, only a few years before this group of RAF servicemen visited the site.

Many thanks to Ken Creed for sending us these pictures, which were taken by his wife's uncle Terry Ruff during his time with No.357 Squadron, a special operations unit that operated over Burma, Malaya and Sumatra.
