This picture of the surrender of General Hatazo Adachi was taken by Geoffrey Cole, whose 14th Platoon, C Company, 2/7th Battalion, 17th Brigade (Australian) was one of the closest units when Adachi finally surrendered on 13 September 1945 at the end of the long New Guinea campaign.
