USS Wasp (CV-7) burning and listing, 1942
Here we see USS Wasp (CV-7) burning and listing after being torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-19 on 15 September 1942 while she was supporting the fighting on Guadalcanal. The same salvo of torpedoes also hit the battleship USS North Carolina and the destroyer USS O'Brien (DD-415). Both survived the initial damage, but the O'Brien was lost on her way back to the United States after the temporary repairs done in the Pacific failed.
