USS Wadleigh (DD-689) off Mare Island, 1945
Here we see the Fletcher class destroyer USS Wadleigh (DD-689) at Mare Island on 11 April 1945, after repairs to damage caused when she hit a mine on 16 September 1944 during the invasion of the Palau Islands. The ship almost split in two and needed rebuilding from the keel up, but she was back in action in time to take part in the final raids on the Japanese Home Islands.
