Here we see the Essex class carrier USS Tarawa (CA-40) being launched at the Norfolk Navy Yard on 12 May 1945. In the centre of the picture is her sponsor, Mrs Julian C Smith, the wife of Lt General Julian C. Smith who commanded the 2nd Marine Division during the battle of Tarawa.
