Swearing in Assistant Secretary of the Navy John L. Sullivan, USS Shangri La (CV-38)

Here we see part of the swearing in ceremony for Assistant Secretary of the Navy John L. Sullivan being carried out on the flight deck of the Essex class carrier USS Shangri La (CV-38) on 2 July 1945, in the Pacific combat zone. Sullivan is at the left, but despite the uniform was the first civilian to be sworn into a Naval office on a ship in a war zone. The speaker is Vice Admiral John S. McCain, Commander of Task Force 38 (Shangri La was his flagship). To his left is Vice Admiral A.W. Fitch and to his right is the ship's commanding officer, Captain James D. Barner.
