USS Salem (CL-3) making smoke, c.1908
Here we see the Chester class scout cruiser USS Salem (CL-3) during a sea trial in which she was making 25.94 knots. This probably dates to the autumn of 1908, when she carried out extensive trials to test her new turbine engines. All three members of the class were given different engines, with the Salem getting Curtis turbines.
