Aircraft Landing Platform, USS Pennsylvania (ACR-4), 1911

Here we see the landing platform built above the deck of the armoured cruiser USS Pennsylvania (ACR-4) and used by Eugene Ely when he made the first ever succesful landing and take off from a ship at sea on 18 January 1911. The ship was moored off Hunters Point, San Francisco. Ely took off from Tanforan Racetrack in a Curtiss Model D, landed on the ship, took off again and flew back to land.
