USS O'Brien (DD-415) being torpedoed, 1942
Here we see the Sims class destroyer USS O'Brien (DD-415) being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on 15 September 1942. In the background is the carrier Wasp which was torpedoed and sunk on the same day. In contrast the O'Brien reached safety, underwent temporary repairs, and was on her way to San Francisco when she broke up and sank on 19 October, one month and 3,000 miles after first being hit!
