USS Maddox (DD-731), Pearl Harbor, 1964
Here we see the Allen M Sumner class destroyer USS Maddox (DD-731) arriving at Pearl Harbor on 19 March 1964 with her crew lining the rails. At the time she was probably on her way to Long Beach from Vietnam, where she had been involved in the Tonkin Gulf incident which had seen North Vietnamese ships attempt to attack her on 2 August 1964, followed by a second incident two days later in which she and a second destroyer probably fired at radar shadows and imaginary enemies.
