Variable depth sonar on depth of USS John W Thomason (DD-760)
Here we see the variable depth sonar equipment on the stern of the Allen M Sumner class destroyer USS John W Thomason (DD-76) on 4 January 1960, the year after it was installed as part of the test FRAM upgrade for the Allen M Sumner class. As can be seen the winch equipment required to operate the sonar took up a great deal of space.
