Here we see Commander Gordon P. Chung Hoon, the commanding officer of the Allen M Sumner class destroyer USS John W Thomason (DD-760) on her bridge early in 1952. Chung Hoon had a remarkable career - he was the first Asian American US citizen to graduate from the US Naval Academy, won the Navy Cross and Silver Star for gallantry while in command of the destroyer USS Sigsbee (DD-502) in 1944-45, commanded the John W Thomason during the Korean War and was promoted to rear admiral when he retired in 1959, making him the first Asian American to reach flag rank.
